Diverter
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001132
A low-pressure system used to direct wellbore fluids away from the rig floor during the initial stages of drilling, before a blowout preventer is installed. It consists of a sealing element that closes around the drill string and a large-diameter vent line that channels any unexpected flow of gas or fluid to a safe location. A diverter is not designed to shut in a well but to manage shallow gas kicks at pressures below approximately 500 psi.
