Hydrolysis
Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000177
A chemical reaction involving water that breaks down a compound, often observed in certain 3D printing filaments like PLA (polylactic acid) when exposed to moisture. This process can degrade the polymer chains, leading to a reduction in material strength and print quality. Proper storage of hygroscopic filaments in dry environments prevents hydrolysis.
