Hydrolysis
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001915
A chemical reaction in which water reacts with a compound, breaking it down into two or more new compounds. In drilling fluids, hydrolysis can affect the stability and performance of certain polymers and additives, especially at elevated temperatures or extreme pH values. For example, some starches and polyacrylamides can undergo hydrolysis, leading to a loss of their intended function.
