Aprotic solvent
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000754
A solvent that does not have a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom like oxygen or nitrogen, and therefore cannot act as a hydrogen bond donor. While unable to donate protons, some aprotic solvents can still accept them and may be polar. This class is contrasted with protic solvents, such as water or ethanol, which readily donate protons.
