Buccopharyngeal membrane

A temporary embryonic structure that separates the stomodeum (primitive mouth) from the foregut. This bilaminar membrane, composed of ectoderm and endoderm, ruptures during the fourth week of human development to establish communication between the oral cavity and the pharynx. Its persistence can lead to congenital anomalies.
