Coelom
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002172
The main fluid-filled body cavity in many multicellular animals, located between the intestinal canal and the body wall. It is lined with a mesodermally derived epithelium called the peritoneum. In vertebrates, the coelom becomes subdivided during development into distinct cavities such as the pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal cavities, which enclose the heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera.
