Compartment

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002298

A distinct physical or conceptual subdivision within an ecosystem or an organism, characterized by specific properties and processes, and often separated by boundaries that restrict the movement of substances. In ecotoxicology, compartments refer to environmental matrices like soil, water, or air, or biological tissues where chemicals can accumulate. The exchange of matter between compartments is a key aspect of environmental modeling.
