Counter-regulation hypothesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002641
A hypothesis within the hygiene hypothesis proposing that repeated infections in early childhood protect against atopy by inducing regulatory cytokines, such as interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor beta, that suppress both T helper 1 and T helper 2 responses. It was put forward as an alternative to the Th1/Th2 imbalance model, in which infections shift immune responses toward Th1 and away from Th2, the arm linked to allergic disease.
