Dead-end polymerisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002883

A radical polymerization that stops at incomplete monomer conversion because the initiator has been used up before the monomer is. It happens when the initiator decomposes quickly relative to the time the reaction needs, so the radical supply ends while monomer remains. The final conversion therefore depends on the initiator half-life at the reaction temperature and on its initial concentration, and a fresh charge of initiator restarts the reaction.
