Deoxyribose
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013027
A monosaccharide sugar that forms the backbone of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) through phosphodiester bonds. It is a pentose, meaning it has five carbon atoms, and is derived from the sugar ribose by the replacement of a hydroxyl group with a hydrogen atom at the 2' position. This absence of the 2'-hydroxyl group makes DNA chemically more stable than ribonucleic acid (RNA), which contains ribose.
