Formal electrode potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004595

The equilibrium potential of an electrode reaction when every species taking part in it is at unit concentration rather than unit activity, written E0'. Activity coefficients and side reactions such as protonation or complexation are absorbed into it, so it shifts with the medium, including its pH and the ligands present. It is the value found when concentrations are known and activities are not, whereas the standard electrode potential is based on unit activities.
