Gel electrophoresis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004793

A technique that separates macromolecules, such as DNA, RNA, or proteins, based on their size, charge, or conformation as they migrate through a gel matrix under the influence of an electric field. The gel acts as a molecular sieve, impeding the movement of larger molecules more than smaller ones. Common gel materials include agarose for nucleic acids and polyacrylamide for proteins.
