Imprinting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005736
An epigenetic process that causes genes to be expressed in a parent-of-origin-specific manner. Through mechanisms such as DNA methylation, either the allele inherited from the egg or the one from the spermatozoon is silenced, so only one parental copy of the gene is expressed. Dysregulation of imprinted genes is associated with certain genetic disorders and cancers, such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
