  "definition": "A family of receptors spanning the membrane of natural killer cells, and of some T cells, whose extracellular part is built from immunoglobulin-like domains. They bind HLA class I molecules on other cells and, depending on the signaling motifs in their cytoplasmic tails, send either inhibitory or activating signals that adjust the killing activity of the cell. Receptors with long tails (KIR2DL, KIR3DL) are inhibitory, while those with short tails (KIR2DS, KIR3DS) are activating.",
