Macroscopic cross-section
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006891
A measure of the probability per unit path length that a specific nuclear reaction or interaction will occur within a material. It is calculated by multiplying the microscopic cross-section of a nuclide by the number density of that nuclide in the material. This quantity has units of inverse length, typically cm⁻¹, and is used in nuclear engineering and radioanalytical chemistry.
