Macroscopic film
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006892
A film whose lateral dimensions exceed 100 micrometres, giving a continuous layer on a macroscopic scale. The name describes extent across the surface, not thickness, so a Langmuir monolayer spread on a trough, only one molecule thick, still counts as macroscopic when it is wide enough. It contrasts with a microscopic film, whose lateral dimensions lie between 0.1 and 100 micrometres.
