Mie scattering
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007374
Elastic scattering of light by spherical particles whose diameter is about the same as the wavelength or larger, calculated as an exact solution of Maxwell's equations for a sphere. Dust, pollen and cloud droplets scatter this way, and because the scattering depends only weakly on wavelength across the visible band, clouds look white. It contrasts with Rayleigh scattering, which applies to particles much smaller than the wavelength and varies as the inverse fourth power of wavelength.
