Pair production
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008421
A nuclear process in which a high-energy photon, typically a gamma ray, interacts with the electric field of an atomic nucleus and is converted into an electron and a positron. This phenomenon occurs only when the photon's energy exceeds the combined rest mass energy of the electron and positron, which is 1.022 MeV. The created particles carry away the excess energy as kinetic energy.
