Paraffin

A common name for alkanes, which are saturated hydrocarbons containing only single carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds. The term often refers specifically to the solid mixture of higher alkanes, known as paraffin wax, used in candles and lubricants. Liquid paraffins are also known as mineral oils.
