pH gradient

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008706

A spatial variation in hydrogen ion concentration within a medium, such as a gel or solution. In biochemistry, this gradient is established for techniques like isoelectric focusing, where proteins migrate through the medium until they reach the point where the pH equals their isoelectric point and their net charge is zero. The gradient is created using a mixture of amphoteric compounds called carrier ampholytes, which arrange themselves according to their isoelectric points in an electric field.
