Quinhydrones

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009784

Charge-transfer complexes formed from the co-crystallization of equimolar amounts of a quinone and its corresponding hydroquinone. These compounds are characterized by a deep color, such as dark green or black, arising from the transfer of charge between the electron-donating hydroquinone and the electron-accepting quinone. The quinhydrone electrode, which relies on the redox equilibrium between quinone and hydroquinone, was historically used for pH measurements.
