Second messenger
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010607
An intracellular signaling molecule that relays signals from receptors on the cell surface to target molecules within the cell, initiating a cascade of biochemical events. These molecules are produced or released in response to the binding of a first messenger, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter, to its receptor. Common examples include cyclic AMP (cAMP), cyclic GMP (cGMP), calcium ions, and inositol triphosphate (IP3).
