Secondary fluorescence
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010613
The emission of characteristic X-rays by an atom that has been excited by absorbing X-rays from a neighboring, previously excited atom within the same sample. It occurs when the primary fluorescent radiation from one element has sufficient energy to ionize a core electron of a different element, leading to a cascade and subsequent emission. This phenomenon, also known as interelement enhancement, leads to an overestimation of the concentration of the secondarily fluorescing element in quantitative X-ray analysis.
