Tandem mass spectrometer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011809

An instrument that combines two or more mass analyzers in series to perform multiple stages of mass spectrometry, often denoted as MS/MS. In a typical experiment, the first analyzer selects a precursor ion from a mixture, which is then fragmented in a collision cell, and the resulting product ions are separated and detected by the second analyzer. This configuration contrasts with single-stage mass spectrometers that perform only one round of mass analysis.
