type-J synchronous planetary motion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012388

A planetary motion of the column holder in counter-current chromatography: the holder turns once on its own axis for every orbit it makes about the centrifuge's central axis, and both turns go the same way. The name comes from the J shape formed by the flow tubes. Because the tubes do not twist as the column turns, no rotary seals are needed, and the coil gives vigorous mixing with good retention of the stationary phase.
