Carbanion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001620

A molecular entity containing a formally trivalent carbon atom that bears a negative charge and a lone pair of electrons. Carbanions are conjugate bases of carbon acids and act as strong nucleophiles and bases in chemical reactions. Their stability is increased by electron-withdrawing groups attached to the negatively charged carbon and by resonance delocalization of the negative charge, as seen in the enolate ion.
