Celiac disease
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001774
An autoimmune condition of the small bowel in which eating gluten, a group of storage proteins in wheat, barley and rye, provokes an immune attack on the intestinal lining. The resulting inflammation flattens the villi and reduces absorption of nutrients. Diagnosis rests on antibody blood tests, such as anti-tissue transglutaminase, and confirmation by small intestinal biopsy.
