Colloidal suspension

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002245

A dispersion in which solid particles in the colloidal size range, roughly 1 nm to 1 micrometre, are suspended in a liquid and do not settle out at a measurable rate. The particles do not dissolve, which separates it from a true solution, and are far smaller than those of a coarse suspension. Gold sol, in which nanoparticles of gold are suspended in water, is a standard example.
