Debye-Hückel equation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002888

A mathematical expression used to calculate the activity coefficient of an ion in a dilute electrolyte solution. The equation models how the electrostatic interactions between ions in a solution cause their behavior to deviate from that of an ideal solution. The limiting law form of the equation is valid only for very low ionic strengths, typically below 0.01 mol/kg, while extended versions apply to slightly more concentrated solutions.
