Ganglioside
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004755
A type of complex glycosphingolipid containing one or more sialic acid residues, which gives the molecule a negative charge at physiological pH. Gangliosides are most abundant in the plasma membranes of nerve cells, particularly at the synapse, where they modulate cell-surface and cell-cell interactions. The specific composition of gangliosides, such as GM1, GD1a, and GT1b, varies between different cell types and developmental stages.
