Interfacial adhesion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013202
The sum of all intermolecular and chemical forces acting at the boundary, or interface, between two distinct phases in a multiphase polymeric material. These forces, which include van der Waals interactions, hydrogen bonds, and covalent bonds, determine the strength of the connection between components such as a polymer matrix and a reinforcing filler. Strong interfacial adhesion is required to transfer stress effectively from the matrix to the dispersed phase, whereas weak adhesion leads to debonding and premature material failure.
