Intervalence charge transfer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005999
An electronic transition within a mixed-valence compound where an electron is optically excited from a lower-oxidation-state center to an adjacent higher-oxidation-state center. This process, also called metal-to-metal charge transfer, creates a charge-separated excited state from the ground state. The absorption band corresponding to this transition is characteristically broad and appears at low energy, frequently in the near-infrared or visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
