Massive transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007010
A solid-state transformation in which a parent phase changes into a product phase of the same composition but a different crystal structure, growing by thermally activated atomic jumps across a mobile, incoherent interface. It needs no long-range diffusion, so it runs faster than ordinary nucleation and growth, yet unlike a martensitic transformation it is not a shear process. It occurs in alloys such as copper-zinc and titanium alloys on moderately rapid cooling.
