Positive selection
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009292
The step of T cell development in the thymus in which immature thymocytes are screened for the ability to recognize the body's own MHC molecules. Cells whose receptors bind self MHC with modest affinity receive survival signals and continue to mature, whereas cells that cannot bind any self MHC receive no signal and die by apoptosis. The surviving cells become CD4-positive or CD8-positive depending on whether they recognize MHC class II or class I.
