Supersaturation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011609

A condition in which a solution contains a greater amount of dissolved solute than it would normally hold at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. This unstable state can be achieved by carefully cooling a saturated solution or by evaporating the solvent. The excess solute will eventually precipitate out of the solution.
