Supporting electrolyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011616
An electrolyte added in high concentration to a solution containing an electroactive substance to conduct the majority of the current. It is chemically inert within the applied potential range and serves to minimize the electrical resistance of the solution and suppress the migration of the analyte ions. The concentration of the supporting electrolyte is usually at least 100 times greater than the concentration of the electroactive species being analyzed.
