Coombs test

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002552

A laboratory test used to detect antibodies that bind to the surface of red blood cells. The direct Coombs test identifies antibodies already attached to erythrocytes, while the indirect Coombs test detects free antibodies in the serum that could bind to red blood cells. This test is routinely used in blood transfusions and in diagnosing autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
