Fringe field
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004677
The electric or magnetic field that extends beyond the physical boundaries of the main field-generating components in an instrument like a mass spectrometer. These stray fields exist at the entrance and exit of devices such as magnetic sectors, electrostatic analyzers, or quadrupole mass filters. Ion trajectory calculations must account for fringe fields to accurately model the performance of the ion optics system.
