Nernst's diffusion layer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007829

A hypothetical, stationary layer of fluid adjacent to a solid surface, such as an electrode, where mass transport is assumed to occur exclusively by diffusion. Within this layer, a concentration gradient develops, driving the movement of species to or from the surface. The thickness of this conceptual layer, denoted by δ, is a key parameter in electrochemical kinetics and mass transfer calculations.
