Paramesonephric duct

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008450

One of a pair of embryonic ducts of mesodermal origin, also called Müllerian ducts, that give rise in the female to the uterine tubes, uterus, cervix and upper vagina. In the male they regress under the action of anti-Müllerian hormone, also called Müllerian inhibiting substance, secreted by Sertoli cells. Without that hormone the ducts persist, whereas testosterone instead maintains the wolffian ducts.
