Rachischisis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009799

A congenital defect in which the neural tube fails to close along part or all of the spine, so the spinal cord lies exposed through a cleft in the backbone. It is an open form of spina bifida, and failure of closure from the brain through the whole spine, called craniorachischisis, is its most extreme form. Closure of the neural tube is normally finished by about day 28 after conception.
