Spin label

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011203

A stable free radical, typically a nitroxide, that is covalently attached to a molecule of interest to introduce an unpaired electron. This allows the molecule's environment and dynamics to be studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Spin labels are widely used in biochemistry to probe protein structure and membrane fluidity.
