Transtentorial herniation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012270
The displacement of brain tissue across the tentorium cerebelli, a dural fold separating the cerebrum from the cerebellum, caused by a pressure gradient within the skull. This serious condition arises from factors such as head trauma, intracranial bleeding, or tumors that increase intracranial pressure. Herniation can be classified as uncal, central, upward, or downward, depending on the specific structures displaced and the direction of movement relative to the tentorium.
