Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004039
A biological process in which polarized epithelial cells, which are normally bound together in a sheet, undergo biochemical changes to assume a mesenchymal cell phenotype. This transformation involves a loss of cell-to-cell adhesion and apical-basal polarity, accompanied by an increase in migratory and invasive capabilities. The process is a normal part of embryonic development and also occurs in wound healing and cancer metastasis.
