Segregation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010664

The non-uniform distribution of the components of a solid solution, resulting in concentration differences between the bulk of a phase and its surface or other interfaces. This phenomenon is driven by the minimization of the system's free energy, leading to the enrichment of certain elements at grain boundaries, surfaces, or dislocations. In metallurgy, segregation can affect the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of alloys.
