Actinic flux

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000163

The number of photons per unit area and time arriving from all directions at a point in the atmosphere, which is the light available to drive photochemical reactions there. It is obtained by adding up the radiance reaching the point from every direction and converting it to photon counts with the photon energy at each wavelength, and it is usually given per nanometer in photons per square centimeter per second. Photolysis rate coefficients follow from multiplying it by the absorption cross section and quantum yield and integrating over wavelength.
