Catalytic graphitization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001724
A heat treatment in which a metal or mineral additive lets non-graphitic carbon turn into graphite at a lower temperature or in less time than it otherwise would. Iron, nickel, cobalt and carbide-forming elements such as silicon act this way. One route is dissolution of disordered carbon in the additive and precipitation of graphite, which is less soluble, at the treatment temperature.
