Diffusion potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003199

A potential difference that arises across a junction between two electrolyte solutions or between two parts of the same solution with different concentrations, due to the differing mobilities of the ions present. Faster-moving ions diffuse ahead of slower ones, creating a charge separation. This potential contributes to the overall electromotive force in electrochemical cells and is typically minimized by using a salt bridge.
